lInquiry-Based Learning
Definition/Synopsis:
Inquiry-based learning is a facilitated educational method of instruction that places the student and the search for answers in the center of the journey of learning. Though this process has been around since the times of the great philosophers and the quest for knowledge, educators have seen the process pop up again and again through theorists like Dewey. Essentially, in inquiry-based learning, a broad-based question/problem/scenario is put forth (this may be generated by the teacher/facilitator or the student), and the student makes a plan, searches for answers/knowledge, applies what he or she learns to the problem in a real world manner, presents the information, and reflects on the knowledge which has been assimilated. While presenting the information, the student will generally analyze what they have learned in order to determine what new questions have arisen from the process (the questions may pop up from the adventurer or the audience to whom the information is being presented).
